The BMRC's New Logo!
August 29, 2024
The Black Metropolis Research Consortium is pleased to share its new logo with the world!
As an expanding consortium, now consisting of 24 archives, libraries and museums, the BMRC is committed to connecting all who seek to document, share, understand and preserve Black experiences. It does this through programming, fellowships, internships, and archival work that aid in expanding access to its members’ holdings that document African American and African diasporic culture, history, and politics, with a specific focus on Chicago.
It is fitting that the new BMRC logo, designed by Seyun Om, is inspired by the African American quilting tradition. Quilting gathers separate pieces into a whole that can be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Quilting is often a communal activity, with the quilts themselves speaking to collective experiences. They have been used in the African American tradition to document family and larger group collective memories.
The font chosen for the new BMRC logo is called Bayard. It was developed by Tré Seals, a designer and owner of Vocal type. This font is inspired by the protest signs used during the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom .
Stay tuned for new BMRC programs and look out for a new website soon!
