The BMRC Welcomes Chicago Covenants as an Affiliate Member

The Black Metropolis Research Consortium welcomes The Chicago Covenants Project as an affiliate member! The BMRC is currently comprised of 24 member institutions committed to preserving and providing access to archival materials on the Black experience.
Through in-depth research of maps, real estate indexes, deeds and legal proceedings, Chicago Covenants have located about 1,000 racially restrictive covenants over 100,000 parcels since 2021.
Interested in checking out this research? The Chicago Covenants Map can be found in the link below. The map displays boundaries of racially restrictive covenants identified in Cook County during the 20th century.
Chicago Covenants project research director, Maura Fennelly, presented a powerful explanation of the work of the project entitled "The Chicago Covenants Project: Identifying Mechanisms of Racist Exclusion" at the 2024 BMRC Community Symposium in March.
Chicago Covenants offers several research training sessions for members of the public who wish to take part in continued research efforts around Chicago --> 7/12, 7/26, and 8/9.
