News: MEET the 2023 ARCHIE MOTLEY ARCHIVAL INTERNS
June 12, 2023
The newly selected 2023 Archie Motley Archival Interns will begin archival training and working on their assigned projects soon, and then wrap up the eight-week summer experience in August. The 3 graduate students, 2 undergraduates, and 1 recent undergrad alum are assigned to four BMRC member host institutions. This year, the host institutions are the Newberry, University of Chicago Library, the Chicago History Museum, and the Northwestern University Library. Projects assigned to interns include processing a manuscript collection of a well-known Black Activist; collecting and transcribing oral histories; describing digital images of photographic material, and creating metadata to facilitate online discovery; developing new lesson plans with archival materials as a teaching tool to be used for instruction and outreach. Interns will also participate in a weekly education and professional development mini-course via Canvas which will include talks given by archivists, Black Studies scholars, former Archie Motley interns, BMRC library tours, reading and discussing articles, learning about the professional organizations, and conducting informational interviews of archivists/librarians. At the end of the eight weeks, each intern will give a brief presentation about their work, what they have learned, and the possible impact on their future.
