"Continually Working: Finding and Telling Stories of Black Women's Economic Activism in the Urban Midwest"
Speaker: Crystal Moten, Ph.D., Lead Curator, Obama Presidential Center
Growing up on the south side of Chicago, Dr. Crystal Moten witnessed the work of Black women in her community, past and present. Yet, these stories were often missing in most historical narratives she encountered throughout her educational journey. Finding and telling these stories has fueled her intellectual journey and professional trajectory. In this talk, Dr. Moten will highlight the job-related activism of courageous Black Midwestern working women and discuss the political and intellectual strategies they used to critique and resist employment discrimination, dismantle unjust structures, and transform their lives and the lives of those in their community. Fighting against a staggeringly powerful and exploitative labor system, these brave Black working women employed strategies that still resonate and are needed today.
Our discussant, Dr. Tracye A. Matthews, Executive Director of the Center for the Study of Race, Politics & Culture, University of Chicago, will converse with Dr. Moten after the presentation and lead the Q&A segment.
