BMRC Fellow Event LaVerne Gray 02-19-25_flyer

We hope you will JOIN US on February 19th at 6:00 PM at Blackstone Library, 4904 S. Lake Park Ave., Chicago, IL 60615.

Dr. LaVerne Gray, a 2024 and 2017 BMRC Fellow, is a native Chicagoan, and Assistant Professor within Syracuse University's School of Information Studies (iSchool). We welcome Dr. Gray as she returns home to share her research in the rotunda at Blackstone Library, in Hyde Park where she grew up. In her research, Dr. Gray examines how a collective of Chicago’s Black college students presented a mosaic of Black life and history in Chicago in a 1927 publication they produced, the Intercollegian Wonder Book or The Negro in Chicago, 1779-1927. Gray will discuss the historical significance of the text, student creators, and their New Negro youth aesthetic.

Dr. Brandon Stokes, a 2022 BMRC Fellow, and Postdoctoral Research Associate at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign will engage in discussion with Dr. Gray after her presentation and lead the Q&A session.
